Bettie Q&A

1.    Your work marries British tailoring with a minimalist aesthetic. What is the most challenging aspect of blending these seemingly contrasting worlds?

Blending British tailoring with a minimalist aesthetic presents unique challenges, primarily in achieving a balance between structure and simplicity. British tailoring is renowned for its intricate techniques and detailed craftsmanship, while minimalism emphasizes clean lines and understated elegance.

The most challenging aspect is ensuring that the garments retain the integrity of traditional tailoring without overwhelming the minimalist ethos. It requires a thoughtful approach to design, focusing on how each element interacts to create a harmonious look. In the end, finding that perfect balance where both influences work well together is what makes the work rewarding.

2.    Having worked under Alexander McQueen, how does his legacy influence your approach to pattern-making, especially in your commitment to zero-waste design? (Tell me a bit more about this experience too!)

Working under Alexander McQueen was a transformative experience that deeply influenced my approach to pattern-making and design. His commitment to pushing boundaries and exploring the emotional depth of fashion taught me the importance of storytelling through garments.

In terms of pattern-making, McQueen's innovative techniques inspired me to think outside the box and experiment with shapes and silhouettes. This creativity is essential in my zero-waste design commitment, as it encourages me to find new ways to utilize fabric efficiently while maintaining artistic integrity.

After working at Alexander McQueen as a textile designer, I discovered my potential for designing print patterns. When I first set up my business, I decided to incorporate my hand-drawing patterns into suit linings.

His legacy reminds me that fashion can be both powerful and responsible. I feel so honour by creating pieces that not only tell a story but also minimize waste, reflecting a sustainable future in fashion.

3.    Your work is very much a melding of East meets West. What elements do you draw on from both cultures to create the Bettie Haute Couture brand identity?

My brand embodies a unique fusion of Eastern and Western elements. From Western culture, I draw inspiration from contemporary fashion trends, tailoring techniques, and a focus on innovation and sustainability. This influences the modern silhouettes and craftsmanship in my designs.

Conversely, my Eastern heritage adds rich textures, intricate patterns, and a deep appreciation for traditional artistry. I often incorporate elements like vibrant colors and ornate embellishments that reflect my cultural background. By blending these influences, I aim to create a brand identity that resonates with diverse audiences while celebrating the beauty of both cultures.

4.    How did they influence the pieces we saw on the runway?

The influences from both cultures significantly shaped the pieces showcased on the runway. I drew inspiration from traditional Eastern design in the collar shapes, adding a unique elegance to our garments, blending these with Western silhouettes and modern tailoring techniques. This fusion allowed me to create pieces that are not only visually striking but also carry deep cultural narratives. Each garment tells a story, reflecting the elegance of Eastern aesthetics while embracing the boldness of Western fashion, ultimately creating a unique identity for the Bettie Haute Couture brand.

5.    Can you tell us about the zero waste ethos and bespoke approach that lie at the heart of the brand identity?

The zero waste ethos is central to our brand identity, emphasizing sustainability and environmental responsibility. We meticulously design each piece to ensure that every scrap of fabric is utilized, minimizing waste throughout the production process.

Alongside this, our bespoke approach allows us to create personalized garments that cater to individual clients' needs. This not only fosters a deeper connection between the wearer and the piece but also promotes a slower, more thoughtful fashion cycle. Together, these principles reflect our commitment to ethical practices and the belief that fashion can be both beautiful and sustainable. These brand concepts have made us stand out in both the tailoring and fashion industry.
